SOMEWHERE

''Thanks for noticing me''.

3D 360 video

The quiet power of loneliness , translated into VR.

Loneliness is a feeling that’s difficult to describe, especially for children. How can their experience of it be made tangible?
In SOMEWHERE (ERGENS in Dutch), artists Jellie Schippers and Myriam van der Gucht explore this question through a 17-minute VR experience filled with moments of observation, emotion, and reflection. Children are guided through quiet, immersive landscapes, where subtle sounds and small gestures capture the sensation of being truly alone, the longing to belong, and the quiet triumph of overcoming isolation.
Throughout the entire process, Cinemersive supported the creators, exploring both the possibilities and limitations of the medium. By collaborating closely on technical, creative, and production decisions, Cinemersive provided VR consultancy, hardware guidance, and full production support. Helping to ensure that the emotional depth of loneliness could be felt as well as seen.
SOMEWHERE invites children to pause, reflect, and connect with their own feelings, offering a unique intersection of art, technology, and empathy.

Technicalities

This project was filmed on the RED V-Raptor, paired with Canon’s Dual Fisheye lens, producing a stereoscopic VR180 image. Although we shot in 180 degrees, we wanted to experiment with a 360-degree presentation, so the footage was projected in VR360 to create an expanded, immersive experience.

Beyond the film production of SOMEWHERE itself, we also provided support for distribution and exhibition. We advised on the best way to present the experience to audiences, ultimately selecting 40 Pico G3 headsets along with software that allows all devices to run the film simultaneously. This setup creates a shared “cinema-like” experience, allowing everyone to emerge from the VR together — significantly amplifying the impact of the story.

The production of SOMEWHERE

We first met Schippers and van Gucht early in the project, while they were exploring different immersive techniques. VR180 was one of them. After experimenting and testing, we quickly moved to create a pilot, trying out ideas over six filming days and editing a version for playtesting.

With insights from the pilot, full production began. Over ten days, we shot all five scenes in single takes, which required careful preparation, rehearsal, and precision.

Two months of post-production followed, bringing everything together with color grading, spatial sound, parallax effects, and countless discussions on how to take each moment further. Eight months after our first handshake, SOMEWHERE premiered at the Boulevard Theatre Festival.
